NOVELTY, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension and partners will hold the first Antlers, Anglers and Ag: Elevating Today’s Outdoorsmen for Tomorrow’s Harvest event Saturday, March 28, at the MU Lee Greenley Jr. Memorial Research Farm in Novelty.
MU Extension agronomist Nick Wesslak said the day includes topics for anyone interested in wildlife management and agricultural production, two passions that are often shared. “This daylong event offers information to improve habitat for wildlife and fish while encouraging farmers and landowners to use new and improved technology,” said Wesslak.
MU Extension weed scientist Kevin Bradley kicks off the day with a session on herbicide strategies to control invasive plants and aquatic weeds. MU Extension state forage specialist Carson Roberts and MDC private land conservationist John Murphy will then talk about favored forage species for food plots.
Cole Gander of the National Deer Association and Mary Sobba of MU Extension will cover hunting leases, fee fishing and hunting land liability issues and insurance. Landowners and hunters will learn how to protect themselves and others when leasing land for hunting or fishing. Cole will also talk about food plot design and layout.
Rich Crowe and D.J. Loken of the Missouri Department of Conversation and MU Extension state forester Hank Stelzer will lead a discussion on habitat management and modification for deer, turkey and fish.
Wesslak will give a talk on soil fertility management basics and agronomists Valerie Tate and Todd Lorenz will give in-field demonstrations on calibrating planters. Doubled Up Outfitters will wrap up the event with a demonstration of using thermal imagery to recover downed game and manage wildlife.
Registration is required and the fee includes lunch. Register online. For more information, contact Wesslak at r.n.wesslak@missouri.edu.
