Food safety course is free to Missouri residents.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension will offer a food safety training course on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) Sept. 9-11, 2025, on the Mizzou campus in Columbia.

The training is free to Missouri residents courtesy of USDA funding through the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

Lakshmikantha “Kantha” Channaiah, state extension specialist in food processing and an assistant professor in Mizzou’s College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, will lead the HACCP training.

This in-person course helps food professionals learn the latest food safety issues that affect their products as well as how to develop an effective HACCP plan, said Channaiah, a leading food safety expert with more than 20 years of experience in teaching, training and research.

“This is a must-attend course for beginners, food processors, plant managers, line supervisors, operators, sanitation supervisors, QA personnel, students (seeking a job at a food business), retailers, exporters, importers and distributors to sharpen their knowledge of HACCP principles,” he said.

The National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods, USDA and FDA strongly recommend implementing a HACCP plan in a food processing plant to assure food safety from harvest to consumption, he added.

The course is accredited by the International HACCP Alliance. Participants will receive a certificate with the International HACCP Alliance seal at the end of the course.

Dates: Sept. 9-11.

Times: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 9-10, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sept 10.

Cost: Free for Missouri residents. Cost for out-of-state residents is $450.
