HERMANN, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension is offering a free four-session class series to help families reduce food waste, save money and prepare healthy meals at home. This course is sponsored and is available to participants at no cost.
The Freeze It! program will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesdays from Oct. 13 to Nov. 3 at the Gasconade County Health Department, 1714 Wein St., Hermann.
Participants will learn meal planning strategies, safe freezing techniques and freezer-friendly recipes that make home cooking easier while reducing food waste, said instructor Rachel O’Halloran, an MU Extension field specialist in nutrition and health.
The program includes tips for stretching grocery dollars and improving family meals, O’Halloran said. Each participant will prepare a full entrée during class and take the meal home, packaged for the freezer.
“In the Hermann series we will prepare recipes such as breakfast sandwiches, gumbo, honey sesame chicken and more,” she said.
Freeze It! is part of a regional initiative funded by the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development to address household food waste in rural communities. Early pilot programs have shown participants cook more meals at home, eat healthier, and waste less food.
