Join us for a FREE  self-guided garden tour in Northwest Missouri!  Visit the hidden gardens in and around Mound City, Missouri and learn about no-till gardening, raising poultry, managing ponds, plus many other topics!   MU Field Specialists will be available to answer questions pertaining to gardening and resources MU Extension has to offer.  Six gardens are featured on this tour, each with a different landscaping goal ranging from a tranquility pool to vegetable harvest.  Garden Descriptions:

The Shady Lady Garden: 1521 Sunset Blvd., Mound City, MO 64470  

Over 50 years of the love of gardening is reflected in this couple’s luxuriously verdant shade garden with hostas galore. This garden is hidden from the public, although the streetside garden is also lovely to admire. Attention to detail in design, color and lighting in container and in-ground gardening abounds in every nook and cranny of the landscape.  

  • Field Specialist in Horticulture, Gwen Funk, will answer questions about shade gardening and general landscaping techniques.

Panoramic Garden: 16629 Hwy 59, Mound City, MO 64470

Your senses of sight and sound will definitely be stimulated in this panoramic garden nestled near the top of one of the Loess Bluffs. The view from the 13 acre landscaped yard is spectacular. You may glimpse wildlife, crops growing in our fertile river bottom, Kansas across the Mighty MO, and of course the gardeners’ beautiful flowers. The garden’s focal point is a lily pond with a stream bubbling into it from the hillside.  

  • T. J. Sethi, field specialist in nutrition and health will guide participants through a short session of Tai Chi, and answer questions about the Tai Chi practice and stress reduction techniques.

The Birdhouse Garden: 403 Frazer Street, Mound City MO 64470

Explore the gardening approach of regenerative agriculture.  This small-town urban garden uses practices such as no-till and the integration of livestock into the system to reduce reliance on synthetic inputs. Chicken runs are incorporated into the garden landscape. A combination of vegetables, flowers and berries provide for biodiversity in this compact space.  The high tunnel is a recent addition.

  • Amie Schleicher, field specialist in livestock, will be on hand to answer questions about caring for poultry.
  • Field Specialist in Horticulture, Todd Higgins, will answer questions about no-till gardening techniques and season extension.

Pond & Posies1521 Sunset Blvd., Mound City, MO 64470

Stroll this beautiful pastoral setting hidden in the middle of Mound City in a valley created by the Loess Bluffs. Enjoy the half acre pond and island restored 29 years ago. The pond was previously known as Moss’s Pond and associated with some local lore. The gardener’s colorful flower beds are interspersed on this 4-acre  yard. There is much to be learned at this site about the construction and maintenance of this water feature. 

  • Field Specialist in Agriculture Technology and Director of Graves-Chapple Extension and Education Center, Jim Crawford will discuss pond development and maintenance.
  • Wayne Flanary, field specialist in agronomy, will be on hand to help you learn about soil testing and how to interpret the results.

The Harvest Vineyard309 Weightman Road, Mound City, MO 64470

Mother Nature displays her beautiful handiwork in the twisted and gnarled vines and bountiful fruit of this vineyard. The gardeners began this vineyard as a part of the Mound City Development Corporation in 2005. The vine variety is Chambourcin and has been sold by the ton to wineries for inclusion in various wines. The gardeners plus an extension specialist will be ready to discuss the pros and cons of raising grapes, as well as, sharing advice on pests in the vineyard and flower and vegetable gardens.

  • Manoj Chhetri, field specialist in horticulture, will be on site to answer questions about small fruit production and integrated pest management.

Loess Bluffs Refuge’s Native Garden159 State Hwy E, Mound City, MO 64470

The Loess Bluffs Refuge offers a unique and colorful garden for those who desire to incorporate more native plants and pollinators in traditional gardens. Through native plants, gardeners can attract more hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and other pollinators to the garden for a more environmentally healthy garden.  Master Naturalists, Friends of Loess Bluffs and a Master Gardener will be available to answer questions and point out the wide variety of plants in the garden.

  • Knowledgeable volunteers from the Missouri Master Naturalist and Missouri Master Gardener groups will be on hand to answer questions about using native plants in your garden or landscape.

Denice Ferguson, field specialist in agricultural business, will be available to provide information and answer any questions about business opportunities  related to agriculture.
