Support resources

Additional support resources

If you’ve taken the Focus on Kids course and are looking for further support, please consider the following resources.

The top priority is the safety of children. It’s important to note that Focus on Kids is focused on general conflict and common communication patterns between co-parents. However, it is important to acknowledge that domestic and intimate partner violence do occur in some cases, which requires specialized attention and support beyond our brief class. Below are some resources, including hotlines to contact if you or a loved one feels unsafe or are coping with the aftereffects of abuse.

Intimate partner abuse and/or domestic violence:

National Domestic Violence Hotline website or call the hotline at 1-800-799-7233 — Call, text, or chat with someone live 24/7.

Preventing & Responding to Child Sexual Abuse Toolkit — Toolkit from Penn State.

Missouri Network Against Child Abuse — Child Advocacy Centers.

Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence website — Information and resources including an interactive map to find help near you.

WomensLaw.org — For legal information concerning abuse.

If you or your child(ren) have experienced abuse or violence, we encourage individuals to seek out appropriate supports. If there is an immediate danger, contact 911 when you are able.

Otherwise, when it is safe to do so, consider connecting with a qualified therapist — Find a therapist in your area.

General family and parenting resources:

Supporting children through times of transition can be challenging. If you are wanting further information or support, please visit ParentLink. They are a valued outreach unit of the University of Missouri providing evidence-based information and guidance. You can find resources on their website or contact them directly via email or phone at the WarmLine — a phone line set up to talk directly to an individual. If you’re not finding what you need online, the professionals on the WarmLine can offer more expansive information.

Building Strong Families is a MU Extension program designed to empower individuals and families with the tools, resources and support they need to cultivate strong, resilient and harmonious family units.
