MU Extension hosts high tunnel workshops for vegetable growers

Published

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension will offer a series of on-farm high tunnel workshops across Missouri this spring.

MU Extension horticulturist Justin Keay says the on-farm workshops will help growers understand some of the unique challenges in the high tunnel growing environment and how to manage these potential problems to maximize production and increase revenue.

“Growing in high tunnels is becoming more popular, and these structures provide many benefits such as season extension, increased yields and reduction of foliar diseases,” Keay says.

“However, high tunnels are a significant investment, and there are some production challenges that are unique to high tunnels that growers need to understand so they can maximize production and make sure the tunnel pays off,” he adds.

The workshops will allow current and prospective high tunnel growers to learn from local farmers and state and regional extension specialists about best management practices for high tunnel production, as well as high tunnel crop budgets and USDA Farm Service Agency resources.

Locations and dates: Warren County, April 15; St. Louis, April 28; Greene County, May 1; Johnson County, May 12; Pike County, May 18. The registration fee for each event is $10.
