ST. CHARLES, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension workshops will help beekeepers learn how to leverage USDA insurance, disaster assistance and tax exemption to strengthen their businesses.

MU Extension horticulture specialist Eli Isele says the two free workshops will help beekeepers safeguard their businesses and profitability. Participants will learn about safety nets for colony losses due to precipitation and other adverse conditions.

The workshops cover USDA’s Risk Management Agency’s Apiculture Pilot Insurance Program, Farm Service Agency’s Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-Related Fish Program and state sales tax exemptions for beekeepers.

The workshop is offered in-person 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the MU Extension Center in St. Charles County and online 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19.

The event is presented in conjunction with MU Extension Agricultural Business and Policy.

“Beekeeping is more than a passion. It’s a business that faces real risks,” said Isele. “This workshop gives beekeepers the tools to protect their investment and thrive in today’s challenging environment.”
