Description
Introduction to Manufacturing Methods is a hands-on bootcamp that introduces the product-realization process, from conceptual design and CAD/CAM to manufacturing and inspection. Participants will learn the fundamentals of machining processes—including milling, turning, and drilling—as well as geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). They will also gain practical experience with state-of-the-art technologies, including Autodesk Fusion 360, Haas CNC machines, and Zeiss coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). Project-based, hands-on training enables participants to immediately apply what they learn to real-world machining and inspection tasks.

Course Overview:
Introduction to Manufacturing Methods is a hands-on bootcamp that introduces the product-realization process, from conceptual design and CAD/CAM to manufacturing and inspection. Participants will learn the fundamentals of machining processes—including milling, turning, and drilling—as well as geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). They will also gain practical experience with state-of-the-art technologies, including Autodesk Fusion 360, Haas CNC machines, and Zeiss coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). Project-based, hands-on training enables participants to immediately apply what they learn to real-world machining and inspection tasks.
Learning Outcomes:
- Practical experience building CAD models and developing CAM toolpaths using Autodesk Fusion 360.
- Ability to apply appropriate GD&T to engineering drawings.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and troubleshooting G-code for CNC machining.
- Skills in setting up and operating a CNC machining center for part production.
- Hands-on experience measuring and inspecting manufactured parts using Zeiss CMM.

- Hands-on experience with CAD modeling and CAM toolpath development using industry-standard CAD/CAM software.
- Foundational training in CNC machine setup, work offsets, Haas probing systems, safe machine operation, and machining.

Instructor(s):
Dr. Yi Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Missouri, with expertise in advanced and smart manufacturing. He teaches computer-aided design and manufacturing processes, covering the entire product-realization workflow—from CAD and process planning to CAM and CNC machining. His courses emphasize active learning, hands-on laboratory projects, and the practical application of manufacturing principles.

Length:
This bootcamp includes four hours of online coursework completed at the day and time that fits your schedule, followed by a 12-hour in-person, hands-on learning day in the Industry 4.0 Lab at Mizzou Engineering.

This course is part of the Industry 4.0 program. Participants will earn an Industry 4.0 Certificate in Introduction to Manufacturing Methods. participants may also earn 1.6 Continuing Education Units or 16 Professional Development Hours.
Audience:
This bootcamp is ideal for entry-level manufacturing and production engineers, engineering technicians, machinists, quality and metrology personnel, process planners, product designers, skilled-trades professionals, production team leads, supervisors, and individuals preparing to move into manufacturing-related roles. No prior CAD/CAM experience is required.
