ShowMe Connection

Welcome to the ShowMe Connection project!

Social disconnection — like feeling lonely or being cut off from others — is a major risk to our health. In fact, many studies show that its effects can be as harmful as smoking, not being active, or being exposed to pollution. The U.S. Surgeon General reports that about half of adults in the United States feel lonely, and more than one third feel upset because they lack close relationships.

The goal of the ShowMe Connection project is to help people in rural Missouri feel more socially connected. The project will build on resources that already exist and will bring together MU Extension units and community partners to offer programs and support for people who feel isolated.

Build social connection capacity

Through this program, eligible participants will be able to participate in physical activity courses (Stay Strong, Stay Healthy or Tai Chi), relationship skills classes (ShowMe Healthy Relationships), and mental health awareness training (QPR - Question, Persuade, Refer) at no cost.

Enrolled participants will complete a brief, free virtual course, “Healthier Together,” focused on raising awareness about social isolation and loneliness in U.S. communities, the importance of relationships for wellbeing, and strategies for promoting social connectedness.

How do I get involved?

To qualify you must:

  • Live in a rural area
  • Be over the age of 18
  • Complete a 2-hour training on social connection

If you qualify, you can enroll in specific Extension classes at no cost, as mentioned above, that are designed to help you learn effective ways to connect with your community.

Talk with your local Extension specialists about your interest and they will connect you with someone to get you started. If you have any questions, email Candace.
