MONETT, Mo. – Hay growers can learn from some of Missouri’s Ozark Empire Fair Hay Contest top award winners during a free tour of southwestern Missouri farms.
University of Missouri Extension agronomist Tim Schnakenberg said three forage producers will give tours of their operations 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28.
Tours begin at the Monett farm of Glenn and Toni Obermann, who have won numerous awards for their alfalfa at the Ozark Empire Fair Hay Contest over the years. From there, the tour will showcase Mike and Drew Meier’s multigenerational operation near Monett before traveling to the farm of Monett grower David Mareth.
“This is an excellent opportunity to see and hear what these three award-winning producers do to make their hay products stand out from the rest,” said Schnakenberg. “Tour participants will get to learn about top-quality alfalfa production, warm-season hay options and how cool-season grasses can improve your hay quality.”
The event is free, but registration is required by Aug. 25 for the lunch count. Lunch sponsors are Circle M Cattle, Purdy Farm Center/Rocking W Farm and Home, and Four State Stockyards.
