LOCKWOOD, Mo. - The 101st Dade County Soil and Crop Conference is 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Lockwood Methodist Church Life Center, 410 Main St., Lockwood.
The event will feature a variety of topics of interest to livestock and forage producers as well as a free barbecue dinner cooked by Hillbilly Express.
“The last couple years of drought combined with overgrazing and repetitive hay production has left many producers’ pastures overrun with weeds and in much need of repair,” says Micah Doubledee, MU Extension agronomy specialist for Barton County. “Producers are looking for additional forage options to incorporate in their pastures.”
“February is a great time to frost seed legumes into your pasture,” says MU Extension agronomy specialist Caleb O’Neal, who will discuss “Frost Seeding Legumes for Improved Pastures.” Frost seeding is a method of broadcasting seeds over snow- or frost-covered pastures. “Inter-seeding legumes into your pasture helps increase forage diversity, improve forage nutritive value and dilute the effects of fescue toxicity,” O’Neal says.
Other topics include “Optimizing Cattle Performance on Fescue,” presented by livestock specialist Ian McGregor, and “Managing Sorghum-Sudangrass,” presented by Carson Roberts, state specialist in forage agronomy.
This event is free and open to the public, but to ensure there is food for everyone, register by 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19. Register online, or call the MU Extension Center in Dade County at 417-637-2112.
