Prepare a cadre of RN nurse leaders and nursing home administrators (NHAs) in long term care (LTC) who can create and sustain improvement in their work settings through enhanced leadership skills.

Topics:

Below is a brief description of what you will learn in each module.

Module 1: The Art and Science of Leadership and Management

Today’s healthcare organizations must be capable of rapid change to maintain a competitive edge and produce safe, effective, efficient, and compassionate care to elders. While traditional management functions are quite necessary, leaders of today and the future must use a relational approach in managing in the complex post-acute and long-term care environment. In this module, you’ll learn to distinguish between the traditional and complex view of leadership.

Module 2: Coaching, Counseling, and Conflict

Conflict occurs on a daily basis, but how you deal with it has far-reaching effects throughout the organization. This module will provide strategies to effectively manage conflict and to help you understand how to make decisions on the best action to take with your organization: coaching, counseling, or termination.

Module 3: Leading High Performing Teams in Long-Term Care

We often hear managers talk about teamwork, but what is it and how do leaders develop high-performing teams? Teamwork is led by a dynamic person who understands how teams function and what they need to reach their goals. This module will discuss the dysfunctions and functions of a team and communication strategies to help improve effectiveness, safety, and outcomes of care for your residents.

Module 4: Leading and Sustaining Change

Change has a great impact on the organization itself, the staff, and the people the organization serves. How change is planned, organized, and implemented determines how successful it will be. This module will explore how to apply a model of change from a group of penguins.

Module 5: Team Approach to QI

Continuous quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) requires leaders to go beyond the standard evaluation to a thought-provoking analysis of what is occurring, as well as articulate the desired outcomes. A systems approach using a team rather than an isolated case-by-case analysis has the potential to produce safe and efficient delivery of care. This module will help you enhance your knowledge of QI techniques and apply this to quality initiatives in your organization.

Module 6: Creating and Leading Person Centered Care

What does Person Centered Care (PCC) really mean? What does it look like and how do we create a culture that values PCC? This module will explore person centered care and person directed care, focused on those residents with dementia, and explore how leaders can ingrain this philosophy and model of care into daily operations.

Module 7: Financial Considerations for Long-Term Care Leaders

Basic financial management skills are necessary for NHA but also the Department Managers they lead. This module is designed to provide a basic review of some of the primary financial skills managers should possess in LTC. In addition, we’ll take financial management to the next level by providing information on how managers analyze the current financial status of the organization and presents a financial case for change.

Module 8: Staff Engagement and Meaningful Work

What is the relationship between employees and the organization? What role does the leader play in cultivating employee engagement? Answering these questions is paramount to retain your most valuable asset, your employees, who will give you the discretionary effort required in healthcare. Managers must be able to use their leadership skills and behaviors to create an environment that engages employees and provides meaningful work, along with nurturing the internal motivators of care partners. This module will explore how relationships and staff engagement impacts individuals and the organization.

Module 9: Influencing Up

Leading challenges us to influence those around us, regardless of their position within the organization. In this module, you’ll learn to assess situations and propose solutions that enhance your relationship with those in authority, so that your ideas can be heard and considered for implementation.

Module 10: Managing Different Generations

During this module, you will hear why different generations have different ideas about how they work and function in the workplace. You will also explore different strategies to manage the different generations in your workplace.

Module 11: RN and LPN Collaboration

Adhering to regulations, although important and very challenging, does not necessarily guarantee consistent quality of care or quality of life outcomes for frail nursing home residents. Many opportunities exist to go beyond the regulations in order to make significant quality and safety improvements in long-term care. In addition, the health care system is undergoing rapid change. As the acuity of residents’ increase and outcomes such as re-hospitalization are scrutinized, maximizing the RN’s role is essential for the organization. This session will focus on practical discussions of the current RN and LPN roles and how each role can be maximized to assure high quality, safe resident care can occur. A specific focus will include aspects of medication safety.

Module 12: The Resilient Leader

Resiliency is the ability a person has to withstand or recover from difficult situations and experiences. A resilient leader identifies healthy ways to manage their stress and prevent burnout in the workplace. Simultaneously, they are responsible for practicing strong communication skills that demonstrate resilience on behalf of the organization. This module will allow the learner to take a self- assessment of their stress levels and how they manage it. This information will be used to set goals and make a plan to manage stress and build resiliency that will enable the learner to lead during times of crisis.
