COWGILL, Mo. – Woodland owners, natural resource professionals and conservation enthusiasts gathered at Bert Farms in Caldwell County for the 2026 Woodland Owners Conference, an educational event that helps landowners make informed decisions about managing and protecting Missouri woodlands.
Hosted by the Missouri Forest and Woodland Association and partner organizations, the conference offered research-based information, practical management strategies and opportunities to connect with experts and fellow landowners. Session topics included woodland management, wildlife habitat improvement, invasive species, timber resources and emerging issues affecting Missouri forests.
Representing University of Missouri Extension were Brian Schweiss, state extension specialist for sustainable forestry; Hank Stelzer, associate professor, state extension specialist and education director of MU Extension Natural Resources; Kathi Mecham, MU Extension horticulture field specialist; and Jen Osborn, MU Extension engagement specialist.
Their participation reflected MU Extension's ongoing commitment to providing landowners and communities with educational resources and technical expertise, Osborn said.
Missouri's woodlands provide important environmental, economic and recreational benefits. Educational programs such as the Woodland Owners Conference give landowners information to help them steward their land, support wildlife habitat and maintain healthy woodland ecosystems, she said.
“The conference offers valuable opportunities for landowners to learn from university specialists, topic experts and experienced woodland managers,” Schweiss said. “Sharing practical information and promoting stewardship helps ensure Missouri woodlands remain healthy and resilient.”
In addition to educational sessions, attendees visited with exhibitors, learned about assistance programs and statewide initiatives, and explored resources that support sustainable woodland management.
MU Extension works with private landowners, communities and partner organizations to advance conservation practices, strengthen natural resource stewardship and support the long-term sustainability of Missouri’s forest resources.
