Event wraps up celebration of the International Year of the Woman Farmer.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Internationally recognized animal scientist, author and advocate Temple Grandin will speak Friday, Dec. 11, as part of a two-day celebration of the International Year of the Woman Farmer hosted by University of Missouri Extension’s Pearls of Production. Grandin’s presentation is 5 p.m. at Trowbridge Livestock Arena on the MU campus in Columbia.
A professor of animal science at Colorado State University, Grandin is known for her work improving livestock handling and animal welfare and for her advocacy for people on the autism spectrum. She has designed livestock-handling facilities used to handle more than half of the cattle in the United States and is the author of several New York Times bestselling books.
“Dr. Grandin’s work has had an extraordinary influence on animal agriculture, but her message reaches well beyond the livestock industry,” said Heather Conrow, MU Extension livestock specialist and 2026 Pearls of Production committee chair. “We are excited to welcome people from across Missouri to hear from her and to begin our 2026 Pearls of Production Conference with such an impactful speaker.”
Pearls of Production continues Saturday
Following Grandin’s presentation, the 2026 Pearls of Production Conference continues 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the MU Beef Research and Teaching Farm.
The conference is designed for livestock producers, combining hands-on learning and opportunities to connect with other producers and agricultural professionals, Conrow said. It will celebrate the end of the International Year of the Woman Farmer, highlighting the leadership, innovation and contributions of women in agriculture.
The conference includes Future Pearls of Production, a program for children ages 5-12 that provides engaging agricultural activities while parents participate in the conference. Child registration is available only for children of participants in Pearls of Production.
Attendees may register for Friday only, Saturday only, or both days. Details and registration.
Pearls of Production is a University of Missouri Extension program that provides educational opportunities, networking, and leadership development for producers involved in livestock production. Through workshops, webinars, and special events, the program helps producers build skills, connections, and confidence while supporting the future of agriculture.
