July 1 training provides critical updates, continuing ed for tax professionals.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – In the changing world of taxes, keeping up with the latest regulations is more than a professional obligation, it’s a competitive advantage.
University of Missouri Extension’s 2025 Summer Tax School, July 1 in Columbia, is designed specifically for tax preparers, said Mary Sobba, MU Extension agricultural business specialist. With a carefully curated agenda and experienced speakers, the school equips attendees with actionable knowledge they can apply in their practice, Sobba said.
“Our summer tax school is designed to help tax professionals stay knowledgeable,” she said. “Previous attendees continue to give us feedback on how valuable the training is for the success of their businesses and clients.”
In the past 10 years, MU Extension’s Tax School has created more than 30,000 hours of continuing education credits for 3,192 attendees, emphasizing tax code examples to better serve accountants, certified tax preparers and lawyers with a tax specialty, she said.
One past Summer Tax School participant said that the tax school helps them “ask better questions and know what information to gather.” Another added, “The examples and case studies give me direction for where I look for answers. I learn more information in one day than I could in other classes.”
Speakers include Roger A. McEowen, Catherine Murphy and Andrew Zumwalt. Sessions will cover:
- Federal tax updates.
- IRS updates and Circular 230 proposed changes.
- Roth and EFT conversions.
- NOL changes, limits and carryovers.
- Taxation of option payments.
- Equipment leases.
- Corporate-provided meals and lodging.
- Retirement plan adjustments.
Sobba said the 2025 Summer Tax School will also provide updates on pending tax legislation and the farm bill. “Tax laws continue to shift, and this school gives preparers the confidence to navigate those changes and serve clients more effectively,” she said.
Participants consistently rate MU Extension’s tax education highly, she said. Many find the educational materials and instructor experience especially helpful. Participants emphasize that after tax education they feel better prepared to assist clients through business and individual tax issues.
The Summer Tax School offers 8 hours of continuing education credit with the IRS and Missouri Bar CLE.
