Children are shaped by their earliest experiences and relationships. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as child abuse and neglect, can cause high levels of stress. According to the Centers for Disease Control, having safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments can buffer against the effects of potential stressors such as child abuse and neglect or other adverse childhood experiences.

Here are some best practices your community could do to support parents and caregivers:

  • Promote the community norm that we all share responsibility for the well-being of children.

  • Promote positive community norms about parenting programs and acceptable parenting behaviors.

  • Raise awareness and commitment to prevent child abuse and neglect by promoting safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments.

A community that supports parents and families helps build the foundation for children to experience safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments.
