Learn how to keep trees and wildlife thriving on your land at free workshop.

PORTLAND, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension and several partners invite the public to a forest and wildlife field day Sept. 12 near Portland, Mo. This free workshop will be held on the property of Bill and Margie Haag in Callaway County from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
“The Haag family takes great pride in their woods,” says Brian Schweiss, MU Extension sustainable forestry specialist. “Through timber sales, they generate revenue and improve conditions for wildlife. They also actively manage open land for wildlife using prescribed fire and invasive species control.”
A driving tour of the Haag property will demonstrate strategies for healthy trees and wildlife. Attendees will see young and old patches of woods and hear about the different wildlife that use them. Professionals from the Missouri Department of Conservation, representatives from conservation organizations and consulting foresters will be available to answer questions and provide insight on management practices such as thinning, prescribed fire and invasive species control.
Schweiss says the tour is a great resource for landowners wanting to see how forests can be managed to benefit wildlife.
The event is free to the public, but registration is required by Sept. 8. Lunch will be provided.
