STOCKTON, Mo. – “Retaining ownership of calves through slaughter is one way to add value to a cattle operation,” says Patrick Davis, University of Missouri Extension livestock field specialist. The Missouri Steer Feedout lets cattle producers try this on a small scale while receiving performance and carcass data on their steers. The program also offers education for producers interested in retaining ownership and making the practice successful and profitable.

Through a collaboration of MU Extension, the Show Me Youth Ag Academy and U.S. Premium Beef, the 2025-2026 Missouri Steer Feedout Finale will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Show Me Youth Ag Academy, 119 NE 15th Lane, Lamar.

“This meeting will highlight results from the 48 steers enrolled by six program participants,” says Davis. Performance, carcass and financial data will be shared to help steer owners and the public better understand feedyard performance and profitability. Brian Bertelsen of U.S. Premium Beef will discuss grid marketing, current cattle industry pricing and slaughter premiums. The meeting will include an overview of the current program and information about the 2026-2027 Missouri Steer Feedout.

“The program is free, but registration is required for the meal provided by the Show Me Youth Ag Academy,” says Davis. Register by Sept. 25 by contacting the MU Extension Center in Cedar County at 417-276-3313. For questions or special accommodations, contact Davis at 417-276-3313.
