Each year, University of Missouri Extension’s Fire and Rescue Training Institute helps honor those firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. FRTI’s collaboration with the Fighters Memorial Foundation of Missouri culminates in two ceremonies: the Candlelight Service and the Memorial Service.
On the evening of the first Sunday in October, the Candlelight Service takes place. This solemn event serves to honor courageous firefighters who are recognized that year, as their names are added to the memorial. It’s a time for reflection, remembrance, and recognition of their dedication and bravery. Family, friends and colleagues come together to share stories, light candles, and pay tribute to those who have given so much.
The following morning, the Memorial Service offers a deeper insight into the lives of these courageous men and women. Attendees are given a glimpse into their stories, celebrating their contributions and sacrifices. The emotional ceremony reminds us of the significant impact these firefighters had on their communities and the legacies they leave.
Together, these two services not only honor the fallen but also serve as a powerful reminder of the risks faced by firefighters every day. The MU Extension Fire and Rescue Training Institute is proud to play a role in this important tribute, ensuring that the memory of our heroes lives on in the hearts of all who continue to serve.
Let us take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our fire heroes and express our gratitude for their unwavering commitment to public safety. Through remembrance, we honor their legacy and stand in solidarity with their families and fellow responders.
