PORTLAND, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension and partners invite the public to a forest and wildlife management workshop on Sept. 7. The free event is 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Bill and Margie Haag’s property in Callaway County near Portland, Mo.

Participants will learn effective land management strategies for wildlife, sustainable harvesting practices and how to use prescribed fire to manage different landscapes, says University of Missouri Extension sustainable forestry specialist Brian Schweiss.

Consulting foresters and professionals from the Missouri Department of Conservation and MU Extension and will answer questions and offer insights on management practices. Participants can also learn how to receive a free visit from a consulting forester.

The Haags take great pride in their woods, says Schweiss. Through timber sales, they generate revenue and improve conditions for wildlife. They also actively manage open land for wildlife using prescribed fire and invasive-species control.

“This tour is a great resource for landowners wanting to see the benefits of properly conducted timber sales and other practices for wildlife,” says Schweiss.

The event is free to the public, and lunch will be provided. Register at https://bit.ly/ForestandWildlifeFieldDay by 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2.

If you have questions, contact Brian Schweiss at schweissb@missouri.edu or Tom Westhoff at westhoff@windstream.net.
