COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri’s Plant Diagnostic Clinic now offers a digital diagnosis service to quickly identify plant health problems.

Growers can easily submit photos of plants injured by insects, pathogens, weeds, environmental stress or improper care, says Peng Tian, director of the MU Diagnostic Clinic in Columbia.

Uploading photos saves the time and money of shipping physical samples. “Most importantly, it enables faster identification and treatment, which helps save plants promptly,” says Tian. “Instead of delivering physical samples to the clinic or an extension office, you can now submit your sample with a simple click.” He gives tips below.

Taking photos

• Take 4-6 photos per sample – the more pictures, the better.

• Focus on the plant tissues showing symptoms or signs.

• Include all parts of the plant.

• Take photos from different distances.

• Submit clear and sharp images.

• Double-check photos before uploading.

• Complete all required information when filling out the online submission form.

When ready to submit your photos, visit https://plantclinic.missouri.edu and select the “Digital sample submission” link. “The more information you provide, the better our experts can diagnose the issue,” says Tian.

You can upload up to five photos as attachments. After submitting, clinic staff will be notified immediately.

What happens next?

Normally, the sender will receive a diagnosis within 1-2 days. If the clinic is uncertain about the issue, they will forward your sample to another expert for further evaluation. If a physical sample or additional testing is necessary, the clinic staff will contact you.

“Take advantage of this convenient, time-saving resource and submit your digital samples today!” says Tian.
