Aug. 7 event offers look at bugs, trees and grasses

HILLSBORO, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension is offering a close-up look at the world of bugs, trees and grasses of the Valley View Glades in Jefferson County.
MU Extension specialists will lead a nature hike along the trail at Valley View Glades Natural Area in Hillsboro 8-10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7. They will talk about the insects, trees and herbaceous plants along the trail.
The 225-acre area, maintained by the Missouri Department of Conservation, is known for its glades, unique ecosystems characterized by a shallow soil depth over bedrock. These areas are dominated by herbaceous plants that can survive in the hot and dry area. “Hikers will enjoy views of intermittent streams, woodlands and open glades for a truly diverse experience,” says MU Extension natural resources field specialist Sarah Higgins. “In addition to the showy Missouri primrose and other herbaceous plants, the area is plentiful with trees, birds, insects, and more to observe along the hike.”
The event involves moderate hiking in potentially hot weather over dirt and rocky terrain, so Higgins recommends that participants come dressed for the weather and bring sunscreen, bug spray and sturdy footwear.
