COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension will hold a free bilingual workshop Nov. 13 in Columbia for farm employees directly involved in livestock mortality composting operations.
The workshop is designed with special attention to ensuring that Spanish-speaking staff have access to this important training, said workshop coordinator Teng Lim, an MU Extension agricultural engineer.
“Our workshop is designed to help on-farm staff understand the basics of livestock composting operation and management, and how to troubleshoot common issues,” he said. “We have also established several composting piles in advance and are monitoring compost temperatures and decomposition progress. Participants will be able to observe how different composting materials and moisture levels affect the composting process over time.”
All workshop presentations will be translated into Spanish, and a Spanish-speaking extension specialist will assist throughout the workshop. “We received excellent participation and feedback from our first-ever Show Me Sow Production Bilingual Workshop,” said MU Extension swine specialist Magdiel Lopez Soriano. The bilingual sow production workshop was held in spring 2026.
The first 15 eligible registrants who work at active swine farms will receive a heavy-duty compost thermometer (limit of two thermometers per farm/company).
The workshop is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at the MU Beef Research and Teaching Farm, 5169 Old Millers Road, Columbia. Registration is free, and lunch and program materials will be provided.
