Mercer County youth artist receives statewide recognition through Show Me Art Month

PRINCETON, Mo. – The University of Missouri Extension Council in Mercer County recently recognized 15-year-old Princeton artist Hector Garcia as the recipient of the MU Extension 2026 Show Me Neighborhood Art Month Youth Art Award. The award was presented Aug. 15 during the Mercer County Ag Night Education Series.

Show Me Neighborhood Art Month is an annual MU Extension initiative that highlights the role of art in strengthening communities, preserving local identity, and enhancing quality of life across Missouri, said Jen Osborn, MU Extension engagement specialist. Each year, artists share community-based artwork through the initiative, and selected artists are recognized for their excellence and creative contributions that have a positive impact on their communities.

Over the past two years, Garcia has completed 12 murals throughout Mercer County. His artwork reflects the county’s history, agricultural heritage, and community pride while transforming public spaces into vibrant displays enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The murals serve as a visible reminder of the important role art plays in creating a sense of place and connection, Osborn said.

Garcia’s artistic journey has been supported by local community advocate Shelly Bickel, who recognized his talent, encouraged his creative development, and nominated him for the Youth Art Award, Osborn said.

“His murals inspire community pride and serve as a lasting reminder of the impact one person can have,” she said. “I shared during the award presentation that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the beauty in Hector’s art is absolutely undeniable.”

Garcia’s work demonstrates how young people can meaningfully contribute to strengthening their communities while honoring local history and culture, Osborn added. His murals celebrate the historical and agricultural heritage that makes Mercer County unique.

“Youth leadership, community and civic engagement, and creativity are qualities we want to encourage in rural Missouri communities,” Osborn said.

Through his artwork, Garcia has helped beautify public spaces while celebrating the stories and traditions that make Mercer County a special place to live and work, she said.
