Free event is May 10 in Hillsboro.
HILLSBORO, Mo. – Missouri Women Owning Woodlands will host a spring hike 9:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 10, at Kress Farm Garden Preserve, 5137 Glade Chapel Road, Hillsboro.
University of Missouri Extension field specialist in natural resources Sarah Higgins says the free event offers a view of Missouri’s beautiful spring trees and wildlife. Appalachian-style loop trails at the Kress Farm feature bluebird nest boxes, streams, cliff caves, seasonal waterfalls and hardwood and cedar forests.
Some of May’s highlights include the flowering dogwood, Missouri’s official state tree for 70 years, with its boughs of white flowers. Hikers will also likely see spring flora and fauna, including the ruby-throated hummingbirds, which are migrating north and seeding nectar from woodland columbines.
Higgins will teach ways to identify different trees at stops along the 1-mile hike. She encourages attendees to dress casually and wear comfortable shoes. The event will be held rain or shine, but it will be postponed if there is severe weather.
