COLUMBIA, Mo. – Over craft beer and candid conversation, health care and technology leaders explored how emerging tools such as smart sensors, wearables and artificial intelligence are reshaping patient care during “Healthcare Technology on Tap,” held April 15 at Logboat Brewing in Columbia.

The discussion brought together experts from the University of Missouri, industry and clinical practice to examine the opportunities and challenges in the future of health care innovation in relation to microelectronics.

The panel featured Blaine Reeder, associate professor at the MU Sinclair School of Nursing; Dan Schwarzlander, chief operating officer and co-founder of CIQ Health; Elizabeth Shaffer, program director at Digital Health KC; and Ben Gerber, a board-certified general surgeon at Boone Health. Panelists offered unique perspective on how new technologies are being integrated into modern health care. Looking ahead, the discussion pointed to continued growth in areas such as artificial intelligence, advanced sensors and chip-enabled devices.

The event was sponsored by the National Science Foundation through a microelectronics supplement fund to the University of Missouri’s CyberCorps project. Additional support was provided by the project partners including MU Extension, MU Engineering, the MU Institute for Data Science and Informatics, the Missouri School of Journalism, and the MU School of Information Science and Learning Technologies.
