Five tips for your next doctor’s visit

Published

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Visits to the doctor can feel rushed and stressful, but a simple five-step approach can help patients feel confident before, during and after their appointment, says University of Missouri Extension state specialist in community health Chiquita Chanay.

“Many people leave an appointment and realize they forgot to mention something important or can't remember exactly what the doctor told them,” Chanay says. “A little preparation can help patients communicate more clearly and better understand their care.”

1. Remember: Before your appointment, gather any information and materials you might need, such as your insurance card and photo ID. Write down any questions you have so you don’t forget.

2. Tell your doctor your health problems in two minutes. Being ready with a brief summary of your health concerns can help you focus on what is most important and make the best use of appointment time.

3. Repeat instructions and information in your own words. This can help make sure you understand what was said and give you a chance to ask questions if something is unclear.

4. Forms: Don’t FORget to fill out your FORms. Providing complete information on medical forms can save time and help your health care team better understand your health history and needs.

5. Take your meds. This means both taking your medications as directed (unless, for certain tests or procedures, your healthcare team has instructed you not to) and bringing your medications to your appointment so your doctor knows your exact medications and dosages.
