Every step counts: Community walks support 100-mile goal

The 100 Miles, 100 Days program encourages Missourians to make physical activity a regular part of their lives by working toward the goal of walking, moving and being active for 100 miles from June 24-Sept. 24. For the second year, County Community Walks were offered in east-central Missouri as part of the initiative, providing residents with opportunities to be active, connect with others and learn more about their communities. There were eight County Community Walks in 2026.

The St. Francois and Ste. Genevieve County Community Walks were a great success, bringing Missouri residents together to enjoy physical activity while exploring the unique features of each county. Three specialists from University of Missouri Extension's  East Central Region received grant funding to support safer walking and participant engagement. Grant funds helped provide sunscreen, tick-repellent wipes, sunglasses, and fun incentives such as socks and shoelaces. Participants also received education about alpha-gal syndrome and ways to reduce tick exposure while enjoying outdoor activities.

In St. Francois County, more than 20 participants gathered at Owl Creek Park, where they learned about the differences between native and invasive plants and the important role native species play in supporting local ecosystems. The walk was so well received that participants asked if similar walks could be offered once each season. In Ste. Genevieve County, the walk explored historic downtown while learning about several notable historic buildings.

Although the walks were county-based, all Missouri residents are encouraged to participate in the 100 Miles, 100 Days annually. East Central Missouri residents also had the opportunity to be entered into drawings for larger prizes. Overall, the Community Walks successfully combined physical activity, community connection, local education and outdoor safety, helping participants take another step toward their 100-miles goal in a fun and welcoming environment.
