COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension’s Crop and Pest Management Field Day on July 10 is an opportunity to learn about best management practices for the most important weed, insect and disease pests in corn and soybean, said MU Extension weed scientist Kevin Bradley.

Bradley and his team will share results and recommendations related to weed management during the event at the MU Bradford Research Farm in Columbia.

Participants will hear updates on the status of herbicide-resistant Johnsongrass and waterhemp in Missouri. “Johnsongrass has developed resistance to glyphosate in some areas and is listed as a noxious weed by the Missouri Department of Agriculture,” Bradley said. “Waterhemp continues to be a major problem in Missouri corn and soybean and has developed resistance to most of the postemergence herbicides commonly used to control this weed.” Bradley will discuss the implications of these developments on weed management in future production systems.

MU researchers also will give updates on the use of drones for applying herbicides and fungicides in corn and soybean production. Bradley and his team will also have stops on the field tour featuring new uses for “old” herbicides and environmental factors that can influence weed control when spraying the herbicide glufosinate. As always, attendees will have the opportunity to view a variety of weed management treatments on their own after lunch, says Bradley.

There is a $30 fee for the event, which includes guided wagon tours through the research plots, lunch and refreshments. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with opening remarks; tours depart at 8:30 a.m.
