University of Missouri Extension regional economic development specialist Ashley Allen-Brown and Camden County 4-H youth program associate Jodie Leifer were recognized by the National Association of Community Development Extension Professionals (NACDEP) for their work on a youth workforce pilot program in Camden County.
Allen-Brown and Leifer were national runners-up in the “Community Excellence: Team” category, which recognizes outstanding extension community development programming or projects conducted by a team.
The award was given in recognition of the Resilient Economies and Community Health (REACH) for Camden County Youth Program. REACH serves youths ages 14-18 with a wide range of post-graduation goals including workforce, entrepreneurship, and civic leadership. The award was presented in June at NACDEP’s 2026 annual conference in Wichita, Kan.
Early indicators show strong momentum through broad student participation, growing employer involvement and measurable gains in youth readiness, Allen-Brown said. “Most importantly, REACH is helping students envision a future for themselves in Camden County – and equipping them with the skills and support to pursue it.”
The program has connected hundreds of students with local employers, helped young people better understand career options in their own communities and strengthened ties between schools and the workforce, she said.
“Each year, I am inspired by the creativity, dedication and meaningful impact our members bring to the communities they serve,” said NACDEP President Kara Salazar of Purdue University Extension. “These award winners exemplify excellence in community development and demonstrate the power of extension to create positive change.”
Allen-Brown has been involved in regional economic development for counties in west-central Missouri since November 2022. Leifer transitioned from MU Extension in Pulaski County to serve as the Camden County 4-H youth program associate beginning in November 2022.
