Description:

MU Extension’s Private Pesticide Applicator Training (PPAT) provides the required education for agricultural producers seeking to obtain or renew Missouri Private Pesticide Applicator certification under Category 20 – General Agricultural Pest Control (CORE). Certification is administered by the Missouri Department of Agriculture (MDA) and is required to legally purchase and apply Restricted Use Pesticides (RUPs) for the production of agricultural commodities on land you own or rent, or on land owned or rented by your employer.

This training is required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and MDA to ensure applicators demonstrate competency in pesticide laws, safety, and proper application practices. Recertification is required every five years to maintain a valid Missouri Private Pesticide Applicator license.

Who Should Attend

  • Producers 18 years of age or older seeking Private Applicator certification or recertification
  • Youth ages 16–17 who are immediate family members of a Certified Private Applicator and require Provisional Private Applicator certification to use RUPs on that family member’s agricultural property

What the Training Covers (Category 20 – CORE)

  • State and federal pesticide laws and regulations
  • Reading and understanding pesticide labels
  • Proper mixing, loading, and application techniques
  • Safe storage, handling, and disposal of pesticides
  • Protecting applicators, farm workers, livestock, pollinators, wildlife, and the environment

This training does not qualify participants for a commercial applicator license.

Supplemental Certification Opportunities

This course does not automatically include the following categories, but supplemental trainings may be scheduled upon request after completing the Category 20 core training:

  • Category 21 – Soil Fumigation Pest Control (approx. 1 hour)
  • Category 22 – Non-Soil Fumigation (Grain Bin) (30–45 minutes)
  • Category 23 – Aerial Pest Control (Drone) (30–45 minutes)

There is no additional fee for these supplemental certifications when coordinated with the MU Extension specialist providing the CORE training.
