Navigating Difference Navigating Difference is an intercultural competency program for people who want to deepen their knowledge, skills and appreciation for connecting across diverse groups of all kinds.

This offering of Navigating Difference is open to anyone affiliated with MU Extension:

  • Field or campus based faculty and staff
  • Extension Council employees / county support staff
  • Extension administration and support
  • Extension Council members
  • Volunteers

Navigating Difference is a highly interactive program taught in a welcoming environment for all learners, with activities that respect and support individual learning styles and perspectives.  The program is not about specific cultural groups, trying to change values or beliefs, or attempting to instill blame or guilt.

Participants are expected to full participate and commit to all five sessions, and to approximately 1.5 hours each week of outside coursework, including readings, videos, and short activities.  In addition, participants will complete the Intercultural Development Inventory and a one-on-one session with the instructor of your choice; both Dwayne T. James and Tish Johnson are Qualified Administrators (QA) for the IDI.  Those who have recently completed that IDI may opt for a refresher session instead.  More information and scheduling options will be provided at the first class.

Navigating Difference will be offered over five sessions, four of those are online on Friday mornings, and one will be a full-day in person:

  • April 19, online, 9:00 to 11:00
  • April 26, online, 9:00 to 11:00
  • May 3, in-person, 9:30 to 4:00, Cole County Extension office, Jefferson City
  • May 10, online 9:00 to 11:00
  • May 17, online, 9:00 to 11:00
  • May 15, online, 9:00 to 11:00

Alumni of Navigating Difference will have the opportunity to participate in mid-year seminars, and potentially to attend a multi-state train-the-trainer program.
