MU Extension’s Private Pesticide Applicator Training (PPAT) provides the required education for individuals seeking Private Applicator or “Provisional” Private Applicator certification under Category 20 – General Agricultural Pest Control (CORE). Certification is administered by the Missouri Department of Agriculture (MDA) and authorizes producers to purchase and apply Restricted Use Pesticides (RUPs) for the purpose of producing agricultural commodities on property they own or rent, or on land owned or rented by their employer.
Individuals 18 years of age or older may complete this training to become Certified Private Applicators. A “Provisional” Private Applicator certification is required for individuals 16 or 17 years old who are immediate family members of a Certified Private Applicator and who will be using RUPs on property owned or rented by that family member.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and MDA require this training to ensure that applicators demonstrate competency in pesticide regulations, safe handling, and proper application practices. Completion of this program is necessary to receive or renew Missouri Private Pesticide Applicator certification.
Supplemental Trainings will be offered upon request after core training:
- Private Pesticide Applicator Category 21 Supplemental Training: Soil Fumigation (1 hour)
- Private Pesticide Applicator Category 22 Supplemental Training: Non-Soil Fumigation (Grain Bin) (30 minutes)
- Private Pesticide Applicator Category 23 Supplemental Training: Aerial Applicator (30-45 minutes)
These supplemental trainings are not for commercial applicator license acquisition or renewal, they are strictly for private pesticide applicator certification. The core Category 20 training will last 3 hours. The time will be extended for those requesting additional supplemental categories.
