Syllabus

Description

This course reviews rabies in livestock with emphasis on how cases present in the field and why they may be misdiagnosed initially. Dr. Dusty Nagy (Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine) discusses rabies epidemiology in the United States and describes clinical presentation and disease progression in cattle and other livestock, including clinical signs and patterns of disease progression that should raise suspicion for rabies. Transmission, pathophysiology, diagnostic limitations, and prevention are also discussed. (Recorded February 10, 2026)

Learning Objectives

Individuals who complete this course will be able to:

  • Describe rabies epidemiology and reservoirs in the United States.
  • Recognize clinical signs and progression of rabies in livestock.
  • Explain transmission and pathophysiology of rabies infection.
  • Identify prevention strategies and situations where vaccination should be considered.

Presenter: Dusty Nagy, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVIM-LA

Dr. Nagy received her veterinary degree from Cornell University and completed a Masters, residency, and PhD at the University of Missouri. She spent 5 years on the faculty at the University of Illinois and 13 at the University of Missouri primarily seeing patients on the food animal ambulatory service, treating beef and dairy cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and camelids. Dr. Nagy is currently a Clinical Professor at Texas A&M University where she is the Large Animal Hospital Chief Medical Officer, a food animal medicine and surgery clinician and instructs students in the preclinical and clinical professional training program.


Continuing Education (CE) Credit

This course is approved for 0.5 hours of veterinary continuing education (CE) credit by the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine.

To earn CE credit, you must:

  • View the full presentation or read the transcript
  • Complete the 5-question quiz with at least 4 correct answers
  • Download your CE certificate (instructions are provided in the module)

Please note: It is the participant’s responsibility to verify whether CE credit from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college meets the requirements of their state or licensing jurisdiction.
