Afghanistan vet and former Missouri secretary of state will discuss his memoir June 17 at free event in Independence.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension’s Veteran R.E.A.D.S. Signature Speaker Series will feature Jason Kander, Afghanistan veteran, best-selling author and the 39th secretary of state of Missouri.

On June 17 in Independence, Kander will discuss his memoir, “Invisible Storm: A Soldier’s Memoir of Politics and PTSD.” The discussion will be followed by a book signing.

“His candid and courageous narrative offers rare insight into the hidden wounds of war and the ongoing journey of healing,” said Joshua Shinn, lead for MU Extension’s Veteran R.E.A.D.S. Program.

When: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Where: MU Extension Center at Truman Habitat for Humanity, 501 N. Dodgion Street, Independence.

Cost: Free and open to the public. Space is limited, so registration is required.
