Free events are Oct 24 in Milan and Nov. 7 in Luray.
Selecting and developing replacement heifers is one of the most important decisions beef producers make, affecting the long-term success of a cow herd. The females that producers keep this fall will influence herd productivity and reproductive success for years to come.
To help producers make those decisions with confidence, University of Missouri Extension will host two Show-Me-Select Field Days featuring education on selection and reproductive management of replacement heifers.
The free field days are Saturday, Oct. 24, at Adrian Farms in Milan, and Saturday, Nov. 7, at Trump BK Angus in Luray.
“The Show-Me-Select Field Day is designed to help producers make informed, data-driven decisions about replacement heifer selection and development,” said Thiago Martins, MU Extension state beef reproduction specialist. By focusing on reproductive management and fertility prediction, producers can increase the likelihood that retained females become productive, profitable cows, Martins said.
Much like retaining ownership of calves creates opportunities to capture additional value, investing in the right replacement females can improve reproductive efficiency and herd longevity while reducing the costs associated with open or underperforming cows,” he said.
Both programs start with registration at 9:30 a.m. Programming begins at 10 a.m., with lunch at noon.
To register, contact the MU Extension Center in Adair County: 660-665-9866, adairco@missouri.edu; or Thiago Martins: 573-673-8118, thiago.martins@missouri.edu.
The events are organized by Thiago Martins and Zac Erwin, with funding from a North Central Region-Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education partnership grant proposal focused on investigating reproductive and genomic parameters associated with pregnancy outcomes in heifers. There is no cost to attend the event.
