MU Extension refocuses Family Nutrition Education Programs

Published

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension is repositioning its Family Nutrition Education Programs (FNEP) to strengthen nutrition education and family health resources for the most under-resourced communities across Missouri.

MU Extension has transitioned the program’s presence with 32 educators to focus on rural communities across the state, delivering hands-on nutrition and health education to families with limited resources, said Jo Britt Rankin, extension professor for MU Health and Human Sciences.

“MU Extension’s mission is to serve people where they are and provide education that helps families thrive,” Britt Rankin said. “By repositioning FNEP, we are building on that mission and ensuring under-resourced communities across Missouri continue to have access to trusted nutrition education.”

The refocus reflects MU Extension’s continued commitment to improving the health and well-being of Missourians through practical, research-based education delivered in partnership with local organizations, she said.

Helping families build healthier lives

FNEP focuses primarily on families with children and other limited-resource households, helping participants build the knowledge and confidence needed to make healthier choices at home.

Through classes and community partnerships, MU Extension educators provide practical guidance on topics such as:

  • Planning healthy meals on a budget.
  • Preparing nutritious foods at home.
  • Practicing safe food handling.
  • Building healthy habits for parents and children.

The program uses evidence-based nutrition education curricula used nationally through FNEP, ensuring participants receive trusted information that can support long-term health, Britt Rankin said.

Working through community partnerships

MU Extension works closely with organizations across Missouri to deliver FNEP programming where families already receive services and support.

Partners include the Missouri Department of Social Services, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Community Action agencies, food pantries and local community coalitions. These partnerships allow MU Extension educators to provide nutrition education alongside services that support food access, family health and community well-being.
