BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – Master Gardeners of Greater Kansas City, the Blue Springs Historical Society Museum and University of Missouri Extension horticulturists have teamed up to make Blue Springs bloom with activities in 2023, including free classes throughout the growing season.

Classes run through Sept. 25 at the Blue Springs Historical Museum, 101 SW 15th St., says MU Extension horticulturist Tamra Reall. Topics include pesticide use, seed saving and deadheading flowers. Master Gardeners of Greater Kansas City also offer spring and fall plant sales, with proceeds going to pay for garden supplies and programming.

Through tours, classes and volunteer activities, gardeners and historians are working together to enhance the museum’s gardens and create an appreciation of gardening and the part it played in the settlement of Blue Springs, Reall says.

The groups work with community partners to educate people of all ages about the joys of gardening, she says. MU Extension Master Gardeners Michelle Cole and Joanie Shover and others enlisted help from volunteers to restore the museum gardens for the public to enjoy and the Blue Springs Classy Clover 4-H Club to use. They also created two children’s coloring books that highlight the joys of gardening and the history of gardening in Blue Spring.

The Blooming Blue Springs Garden Club also partners with Blue Springs Downtown Alive and the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce to keep downtown container gardens beautiful. Membership in the club is free.
