COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri Extension State 4-H Horse Bowl Contest, April 10, drew 19 youths from across the state to the MU campus to demonstrate their knowledge of equine-related topics.

Top junior competitors (ages 8-10 only)

• First, Paige Harris, Callaway County.
• Second, Edith Carson, Boone County.

Top junior competitors (ages 8-13)

• First, Kaelynn Samuels, Boone County.
• Second, Gracie Smith, Boone County.
• Third, Harley Hook, Callaway County.

Top junior team

• Boone County - Gracie Smith, Geena Curtis, Kaelynn Samuels and Madelyn Daly.

Top senior competitors (ages 14-18)

• First, Alaina O’Dell, Jackson County.
• Second, Bailey Spalding, Jackson County.
• Third, Elizabeth Pruett, Jackson County.

Top senior team

• Jackson County - Bailey Spalding, Elizabeth Pruett, Alaina O’Dell and Kelsa Kirk.

The Jackson County team will advance to represent Missouri in a national contest.

A majority of contest participants reported that their knowledge in areas such as equine confirmation, behavior, equipment, diseases, anatomy, terminology and characteristics improved as a result of participating in the event, said Maria Calvert, state 4-H agriculture and natural resources educator.
