Current and Emerging Trends in Collective Bargaining
The collective bargaining process continues to be a source of consternation and confusion for labor and management. Yet, in today's economic environment, collective bargaining remains the most important way for unions and employers to negotiate over employees' conditions. This presentation examines the state of collective bargaining in 2024. The presentation focuses on the economic relevance of bargaining, the issues driving conflict at the bargaining table, the resources available to assist in the negotiation process, and what changes we might expect in the upcoming years.

Glen Reed, Commissioner, Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service, graduated from the Coles School of Business in 1997 at Kennesaw State University with a BA in management, with concentrations in human resources and small business management.
Reed started his career as an association executive serving the National Electrical Contractors Association, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors Association, and the Mechanical Contractors Association of America. These experiences provided him with insight into collective bargaining and grievance-handling procedures. During this time, he also was a trustee for several health and welfare and defined benefit pension trusts.
Glen joined the Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service in March of 2003. As a Commissioner, Glen works with public (municipal, state, and education), federal, and private sectors within construction, health care, manufacturing, retail, transportation, and utilities.
