STOCKTON, Mo. – “The Southwest Missouri All Breeds Performance Tested Bull Sale will take place on March 30,” says Patrick Davis, University of Missouri Extension livestock field specialist. The sale features 27 bulls, including 22 Angus, three Gelbvieh and two SimAngus animals. Organized by the Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association, this longstanding event starts at 7 p.m. at the Springfield Livestock Marketing Center in Springfield.
“This sale utilizes genomics and performance metrics in the development of its bull offering,” says Davis. Expected progeny difference (EPD) is an indicator of how a bull’s offspring will perform, reflecting that bull’s genetic merit. Bulls consigned to this sale are required to meet specific performance and EPD standards. Sale bulls must demonstrate above-average EPDs for their breed in three out of six categories: calving ease direct, weaning weight, yearling weight, milk, marbling and ribeye area. Additionally, genomic testing is mandatory, enhancing confidence in their genetic value. Davis notes that, given the rigorous screening process, buyers can be assured they are selecting bulls with superior performance and genetic merit, which are critical factors when choosing a new herd sire.
“MU Extension will host an educational session to discuss using EPDs when purchasing bulls,” says Davis. The session, called “Buying Bulls by the Numbers,” is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the sale arena before the sale begins.
