POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension in Butler County will host a Meet Your Extension event 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in the parking lot of Southern Bank in Poplar Bluff.

“This is an interactive event for people to get a feel for some of the things MU Extension does in the community,” said John Fuller, MU Extension human development specialist for Butler and surrounding counties.

Attendees can learn about MU Extension programs, meet extension educators from across the region, see demonstrations on a variety of topics, enjoy hot dogs roasted by county commissioners, and enter drawings for prizes.

“Missouri Master Gardeners will be there to answer questions and talk about getting the garden ready for winter,” Fuller said. “4-H specialists will show some of the youth activities offered in the area.”

One of the driving forces behind the event is Jo Ann Brandon of the Butler County Extension Council.

“As a new council member, I’m learning more and more about what MU Extension has to offer,” Brandon said. “And I wondered: If I didn’t know about the vast services, are there others who don’t know? And how can the council share this information?”

Many people think of extension mainly in connection with agriculture, she said. “But farming is just the tip of the iceberg.” MU Extension programs cover topics as diverse as nutrition, fall prevention for the elderly, personal finance, stress management, small business development and parenting. “And if we don’t provide the needed service, we will point you in the right direction to a service that will meet that need.”

Fuller hopes this will be the first in a series of Meet Your Extension events throughout the county.

Southern Bank is at 2991 Oak Grove Road in Poplar Bluff. For more information, contact MU Extension in Butler County at 573-686-8064.
