COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension and the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources will offer fun and educational events for young and old at the first Home Garden Showcase, 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 27, at MU’s South Farm.

There will be activities for all ages such as making grass sock pets, learning to grow grapes and sunflowers and how to prepare soil samples, says Tim Reinbott, farm superintendent.

The showcase also offers tomato and tomatillo tasting. Tomatillos are small, round tomatoes with papery husks. They are a common staple in Mexican cuisine.

Weed experts will be available to identify weeds and tell how to control them. Eventgoers may bring a weed to compete for a prize for the tallest weed.

MU South Farm is at 3600 New Haven Road, Columbia.

Preregistration is requested. Register online at muext.us/HomeGardenShowcase. Coffee, tea and donuts are offered as part of the small admission fee. Admission is free for children 12 and under.
