MU Engagement Awards


The Office of Extension and Engagement recognizes MU faculty, staff and students who are committed to advancing the teaching, research and extension/service missions of our land grant university through engagement. Engaged partnership with individuals, organizations and communities throughout the state is the backbone of our extension and engagement efforts, and is essential to improving the lives of Missourians and solving our collective challenges in education, health, agriculture and economics. MU faculty, staff and undergraduate student leaders in engagement today are eligible to apply! (Graduate student engagement awards are handled separately but graduate students can be part of team nominations.) Check each award for specific criteria. Faculty Engagement Award
Out of respect for the financial constraints we're all facing, the Office of Extension and Engagement has elected to suspend for one year all 2020 awards that include a cash stipend, professional development funds or program enrichment funds unless the award is funded and designated by an endowment or gift. We recognize and value the extraordinary work that our faculty and staff have done throughout the year and in response to the global pandemic, and we look forward to honoring and rewarding you, and celebrating together in the future
Purpose
The purpose of this award is to recognize University of Missouri faculty for sustained community engagement or engaged scholarship. Community engagement, or engaged scholarship, represents a collaboration between higher education faculty and their community for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and/or resources in a framework that is cooperative and reciprocal. Scholars collaborate with practitioners in the public and/or private sectors to enrich their own scholarly and creative activities while addressing a critical societal issue or contributing to a community need or public good.
Community-engaged scholarship is directly related to to your discipline or area of work in the university and always associated with university-community partnerships.
Community represents groups of people who share commonalities, including geography (local, global); identity; affiliation or interest; circumstance; profession or practice; faith; and/or family/kin.
Scholarly means the work is based on existing scholarship and best practices and will generate new understandings and scholarly products for academic and public audiences. All scholarship, including community-engaged scholarship, requires high level of disciplinary (or interdisciplinary or across any tyypes of units) expertise and uses an appropriate methodology.
Engaged means the work can be described as systemic, collaborative, asset-based, mutually beneficial, capacity building and for the public good.
We use this award to emphasize the astonishing work University of Missouri faculty members are carrying out with the community around them to mutually engage and enhance both themselves and their society.

Recipients of this award will receive $1,000 to be used in support of community engagement efforts. A symbol of recognition will also be presented to the individual by the Vice Chancellor for Extension and Engagement.

Any University of Missouri faculty that has contributed to engagement with their community is eligible. Members of the Award Committee will not be eligible for this award.

Community engagement, or engaged scholarship, represents a collaboration between higher education faculty and their community for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and/or resources in a framework that is cooperative and reciprocal. Scholars collaborate with practitioners in the public and/or private sectors to enrich their own scholarly and creative activities while addressing a critical societal issue or contributing to a community need or public good.
