Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) teaches participants how to recognize signs that a youth may be developing a mental health or substance use challenge and how to offer initial support. Participants also learn how to encourage and connect youth to appropriate professional care when needed.
This evidence-based training introduces the ALGEE Action Plan, which helps participants learn how to:
- Assess for risk of suicide or harm
- Listen without judgment
- Give reassurance and information
- Encourage professional help
- Encourage self-help and other support strategies
Who Should Attend
This training is open to anyone who wants to better support youth mental health, including:
- Parents, caregivers, and family members
- Teachers, school staff, and youth-serving professionals
- First responders, veterans, and community leaders
- Coaches, mentors, volunteers, and caring community members
No prior mental health training or professional background is required.
Registration Requirements
- Advanced registration is required
- Participants must complete 2.5 hours of self-paced online training at least 72 hours before the course date
