Description

This 8-hour seminar provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to understand officer wellness and emotional intelligence. The course, led by Sergeant Robert Fox and Dr. Dalal Juma, covers the Officer Wellness Model and its various components, including awareness, solution-focused approaches, peer support, resiliency, healthy habits, spirituality, and family. Participants will also learn about Emotional Quotient (EQ) and the various components of Emotional Intelligence (EI), including self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Students will be required to demonstrate proficiency in both officer wellness and emotional intelligence components by completing self-assessments and reflecting on areas that require additional development.

Sergeant Robert Fox, a police supervisor and trainer with 17 years of law enforcement experience, will be one of the instructors for this course. Robert has worked as an officer, FTO, instructor, sergeant, and lieutenant at a mid-size police department. He has also been a SWAT team member for over eleven years as a sniper, sniper team leader, and trainer. Robert has also worked on community policing, developing a plan for the City Manager and Council to further develop community-oriented policing. Prior to law enforcement, Robert worked with police and social services in the United Kingdom to reduce recidivism in young offenders. He also served in the British Army for eleven years.

Dr. Dalal Juma, who holds a Bachelor's degree in Education, a Master's in Education, and a Doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership, will also be an instructor for this course. Dr. Juma conducted and published research regarding Emotional Intelligence and Organizational Climate during her doctoral studies. She served as an educator and administrator in various educational settings for ten years. She has over ten years of experience researching and implementing fundamentals of diversity equity and inclusion in public and private sectors, including educational settings and private organizations. She has served on panels and presented at local and national-level conferences throughout the United States. Dr. Juma currently serves as a Learning Consultant on a Department of Defense contract for a large-scale technology organization.
