Becoming an Engaged Neighbor

  • Zoom

Neighboring is the art and skill of building relationships with the people who live in the closest proximity to you. Being a good neighbor offers tremendous health benefits, leads to reductions in crime, reduces loneliness, improves communities, and improves your quality of life. University of Missouri Extension is at the forefront of a national movement that recognizes the importance of neighboring in community development. MU Extension is offering classes like "Neighboring 101" and "Becoming an Engaged Neighbor" along with two annual neighboring events as a way to raise awareness and encourage others to focus on neighbors.

This class is available nationwide to anyone with online access.

The class includes six sessions.

Students will receive a class syllabus with links to videos to watch before class.

Discussion will take place through zoom (at a time best for class members) We create various time options based on the size of the class and students availability after registration is complete. For example, discussion groups could be offered each week at 7 a.m., 12 noon and 7 p.m. (CST)

Attendees will receive a high quality handout of information and ideas.

Students will be asked to plan a local neighborhood project on paper.

Graduates will have opportunities for future training and events.

The sessions make use of materials from both MU Extension and other program partners like The Hopeful Neighborhood and The Neighboring Movement. The goal of this program is to train community opinion leaders about what it means to be a good neighbor and to then take action locally in their own neighborhood. This partnership uses the ideas of Asset-Based Community Development to deepen the study and to help the class appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Community leadership programs increase the capacity of individuals, organizations and communities to provide leadership and address community issues effectively.
