The Business Model Canvas enables the new or existing businesses to develop, test and refine a new business or product introduction idea before investing in the detailed planning. In use worldwide, the Canvas uses nine building blocks to create a business model that works through the logic and interrelationships between your product, your customers, operations and how you will make money. Assistance and answers to your questions are available from the nearest Small Business Development Center that can be found at www.missourisbdc.org Offered in six short modules, anyone completing all six modules will have drafted a business concept using the Canvas and will receive a course completion certificate. The Missouri SBDC is funded in part through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration and is a University of Missouri Extension partner. Course Developer

The course developer is a Business Development Field Specialist with the University of Missouri Extension's Small Business Development Center (SBDC).  The SBDC is a network of centers located throughout the state on University of Missouri campuses and facilities, and on the campuses of other state universities.  Each center provides counseling, coaching, training, and specialized services for start-up and existing businesses.  If you have questions on the course's content, contact the center most convenient to your location.  Our centers can be found on the Missouri SBDC website.  Click on the local help icon for a listing of centers and contact information.

Course Description

The purpose of the course is strictly to provide information and knowledge. There are no prerequisite knowledge and competencies.

The Business Model Canvas enables new or existing businesses to develop, test and refine a new business, product introduction, new customer segment, or market area idea before investing in the detailed planning.  In use worldwide, the Canvas uses nine building blocks to create a business model that works through the logic and interrelationships between your products, customers, operations and how you will make money.  Offered in six short modules, anyone completing all six modules will have drafted a business concept using the Canvas and will receive a course completion certificate. 

Course Objectives

By completing this course, the student will understand:

  •       What the Business Model Canvas is and how to use it
  •       How it creates and validates a business model or concept
  •       How it relates to and aligns with business planning

Additionally you will have drafted a Business Model Canvas for your business idea.

Course Organization

All six modules are delivered in a lecture format using videos.  

Assessments and Grading

The course is ungraded.  There are templates to download, exercises to complete, quizzes at the end of each module as well as an end of course survey.

Textbook and Reading Materials

Copies of each module's slides and speaker notes are available for download. There are no other materials needed.

Course Completion

A course completion certificate is provided with the submission of the training registration form, completion of all six modules and the submission of the course satisfaction survey.

Access your course from your MU Extension account.
