Honors, recognitions and announcements about University Outreach and Extension faculty and staff

Amanda Cook, NE ag and rural development specialist, assumed Lewis County program director responsibilities Nov. 1.

Renette Wardlow, SW 4-H youth specialist, received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Ozark Chamber of Commerce Nov. 13. The Christian County extension office received the chamber’s Pacesetter Award.

Four MU Extension specialists from the SC Region were among those recognized by the Natural Resource Conservation Service for their work in planning the Regional Forage and Beef Conference in February 2004. Honored at the NRCS Area 3 banquet were Gary Applegate and Ted Cunningham, livestock; Dinah Peebles, ag business; and A.J. Foster, SC agronomy.

MU Extension was featured in the winter issue of Mizzou, the MU Alumni Association magazine.

Ron Walker, NW 4-H youth specialist, is DeKalb County program director.

George Stuart-Simmons, WC community development specialist, is Johnson County program director.

Mike Schrader, business development counselor, has been named assistant director of the Columbia Small Business Development Center.

Congratulations to Greg Rotert, AgEBB computer programmer/analyst, who married Mary Ann Clark Oct. 9.

Terrie Nagel, student services coordinator at the Center for Distance and Independent Study, is the author of “Distance Education: The Impact of Goal Orientation, Motivational Beliefs and Strategies, and Course Satisfaction,” published in the October 2004 issue of the International Journal of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis received the Malcolm Knowles Award for Outstanding Adult Education Program Leadership for its graduate degree program in adult education and human resource development. John Henschke, EC continuing education specialist, developed the course.

The University of Missouri-Rolla is ranked 22nd among 357 campuses for entrepreneurship in a survey by Forbes magazine and the Princeton Review. The Center for Entrepreneurship and Outreach was a contributing factor in UMR’s selection. See: "Universities for the Entrepreneurially Minded."

Debbie Robison, associate vice provost, has been elected Mid-America regional representative to the University Continuing Education Association’s board of directors. Beginning in April 2005, she will serve a two-year term. She will be interim alternate regional representative until that time.

University of Missouri benefit-eligible employees will be receiving 2005 enrollment information in the mail. The enrollment period will end Nov. 17. An advanced copy of the enrollment information is available on the Web.

The MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute's mobile aircraft firefighting simulator will be featured on The History Channel's Tactical to Practical at 10 p.m. Oct. 25. The show airs again at 2 a.m. Oct. 26.

Steve Wyatt, business development program director, has been selected to receive the Mary Nell Greenwood Evaluation Award from the American Evaluation Association’s Extension Education Evaluation topical interest group. The award recognizes Wyatt’s efforts to develop an ongoing, comprehensive evaluation process for the business development program.

The University of Missouri Alumni Alliance’s Legislative Recognition Day is scheduled for March 16 at the Capitol in Jefferson City. The alliance, which includes members of the University of Missouri Extension State Council, organizes the annual visit with state legislators. Susan Mills-Gray, University of Missouri Extension Association representative for the WC Region, will coordinate registration of extension volunteers.

Gerald Bryan, SE agronomy specialist, and Parman Green, CM ag business specialist, received Distinguished Service awards from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. Professional Improvement Council awards were presented to Bob Schultheis, SW natural resources engineering specialist; Eldon Cole, SW livestock specialist, and Mark Stewart, CM livestock specialist.

Katie K. Ketchman, NW 4-H Youth specialist, resigned Oct. 8.

Carol Hutchison, administrative assistant, has moved to Extension Technology and Computer Services, 22 Heinkel Building. Her phone number remains (573) 882-2243.

Karen Funkenbusch, MU research assistant in ag engineering extension, was quoted on farm safety for kids in the September issue of Today's Farmer and on ergonomic gardening tools in the L.A. Daily News.

Congratulations to Betty Linke, Lincoln County secretary, who married Mark Schlueter Sept. 26.

Evan Smith, university and noncredit coordinator for the Center for Distance and Independent Study, is the author of Considerations of Rank and Niche in Distance Education, published in the Fall 2004 edition of the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration.

Tom Henderson, interim vice provost, was given Honorary Master Gardener status at the group’s statewide conference last week.

Copies of the poll-worker training curriculum developed by MU Extension Community Development have been requested by and sent to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission in Washington, D.C., and to the International Foundation for Election Systems.

City TV 10, the St. Louis County government cable channel, is rebroadcasting the July 30 Critical Issues Forum on Education and Jobs throughout September.

Cynthia Fauser, EC nutrition specialist, was interviewed Aug. 29 by KMOX-AM Radio in St. Louis about recent research linking consumption of sugary beverages to increased diabetes risk.

An interview with Miranda Duncan, EC community development specialist, about her work with a community mediation project in North St. Louis County aired Aug. 23 on KMOX.

MU Extension’s Building Strong Families program is among those listed in a resource guide developed by CSREES and distributed by the Kansas City regional office of U.S. Health and Human Services.

Members of the High Flying Hawks and King's Kids 4-H clubs of Jefferson County will appear KSDK-TV's "Today in St. Louis" between 6 and 7 a.m. Aug. 18. The clubs will promote an Aug. 21-22 fund raiser at the Pevely Flea Market.

An MU Extension program, Step Up to Leadership, was featured in the Aug. 8 issue of the Columbia Daily Tribune and the Aug. 12 Jefferson City News-Tribune. Step Up to Leadership trains clients of agencies receiving federal funds to serve on the governing boards of those organizations. Johanna Reed Adams, state community development specialist, and Miranda Duncan, EC community development specialist, are implementing the program in central Missouri and the St. Louis area.

Congratulations to Jennifer Barnes-Schutter, NE horticulture specialist, who married David Schutter July 9.

Kim Allen, SW consumer and family economics/human development specialist, resigned July 31.

Roxanne T. Miller’s title changed to communications specialist July 21.

Congratulations to Tim Horton, EC horticulture specialist, and his wife, Kerry, on the July 27 birth of their son, Ethan Christopher.

The National 4-H Technology Leadership Conference July 24-28 received wide media coverage in St. Louis. KMOX-AM Radio interviewed 4-Hers Nick Williamson of Manchester and Angela Groh of Iowa July 24. Williamson; his father, Dane Williamson; and brother, Sean Williamson, appeared on KSDK-TV Channel 5 on July 24. Sean Fears, AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, was featured in the July 22-28 issue of the St. Louis American. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Metro Section July 25 included an article on the Forest Park mapping project.

Cathy Bailey, Henry County nutrition program associate, and Lisa Wallace, WC human development specialist, received the Friend of Education Award from the Clinton School District. The award recognizes University of Missouri Extension for the variety of educational programs provided to elementary-age students.

Beverly Maltsberger, NW community development specialist, was recognized as a 2004 Women of Excellence Woman in the Workplace by the St. Joseph YWCA. Maltsberger was recognized for outstanding contributions to leadership in the community and for serving as a mentor for other working women.

Nancy Coleman, WC 4-H youth specialist, became Ray County program director July 1.

Jennifer Mayfield, SE nutrition specialist, resigned July 13 to accept a position with the University of Nebraska.

Marie Steinwachs, director of MU Extension’s Office of Waste Management, received the Coalition Contribution Award from the Missouri Waste Control Coalition. The award recognizes Steinwach’s for contributions to the coalition’s development and growth. Steinwachs served as the organization’s president in 2000-01.

EC regional specialists John Henschke, continuing education; Rosilee Trotta, urban youth and family; and Roxanne Miller, information, were presenters at the annual Missouri Association for Adult Continuing and Community Education conference June 16-18 in Osage Beach. Henschke and E. Paulette Isaac, UM-St. Louis assistant professor, discussed "Joys and Concerns of Navigating Through Your First On-Line Course." Trotta and Miller presented "Developing Potential from the Inside Out: A Tough Skills Program That Works for Hard-to-Reach Audiences."

The Old North Neighborhood Project, a joint effort of MU Extension and the UM-St. Louis Public Policy Research Center, was the cover story in the spring issue of UM-St. Louis magazine. Kay Gasen, urban program leader, heads up the project.

Titles for NE Region specialists Wendy Brumbaugh and Debby Whiston have changed from human environmental sciences to consumer and family economics.

Emma Theuri, CM 4-H youth specialist, resigned effective June 30 to accept another position.

Gary Lesoing, WC agronomy specialist, resigned effective June 23 to accept a position with the University of Nebraska.

Missouri's Spanish-language version of the public discussion guide, "Los Nuevos Desafios de la Inmigracion en los Estados Unidos: Que Debemos Hacer?" ("The New Challenges of American Immigration: What Should We Do?"), is featured on the National Public Issues Forum Web site,.

The Ozark Area Community Action Agency presented an award to Ann FitzGerald, SW consumer and family economics specialist, and Tom Keohan, SW business and industry specialist, for their work with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Through VITA, 264 low-income families in southwest Missouri received income-tax preparation assistance, resulting in refunds of more than $300,000.

Congratulations to Allison Rentfro, MU director of continuing medical education, and husband Keith on the May 10 birth of their son, Samuel. Cards may sent to 508 Pacer Drive, Ashland, MO 65010.

University of Missouri Extension's Old North Neighborhood project in St. Louis was featured in the May 6 issue of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The article, "Students pair with businesses to develop strategies," describes how extension connected business owners with UM-St. Louis students to develop business plans.

An article, "A case study reveals agreement: Responsible editors should not let others read letters before publication or allow personal attacks in letters," by David Burton, SW civic communications specialist, was published in the Spring 2004 issue of the "Grassroots Editor."

Cynthia Fauser, EC nutrition specialist, and Roz Sherman Voellinger, EC labor education specialist, are featured on "City Corner," a half-hour show that airs on St. Louis City Cable TV. Fauser discusses nutrition labeling and trans fats; Voellinger talks about jobs and a May 13 construction trades open house. The program also will air May 1 on ABC Channel 30. Fauser also taped five 30-second nutrition and health updates that will air several times weekly in May on Charter Communications cable TV in St. Louis.

Scott Payne, NE agronomy specialist, resigned, effective April 30, to accept employment in Tennessee.

Jamie Haase, McDonald County secretary, resigned after 19 years of service.

Diane Grossman, Pulaski County extension secretary, retired on March 31. Cards may be sent to the Pulaski County Extension Office, 301 Historic 66 E., Suite 127, Waynesville, MO 65583.

Re-linking farmers and consumers: A successful coffee story by Mary Hendrickson, Food Circles network coordinator, was published April 8 in CropChoice, an Internet newsletter.

Claudette Roper, interim coordinator, has accepted the TCRC coordinator position at Mineral Area Telecommunications Community Resource Center.

Nathaniel Jaeggli, interim coordinator has accepted the TCRC coordinator position at Kirksville Telecommunications Community Resource Center.

Jinny Hopp, SW human development specialist, was a co-presenter at Missouri's First Show-Me Summit on Aging and Health, March 8-10, at Lake Ozark. Hopp and Brandy Wooden, family caregiver coordinator for Region 10 Area Agency on Aging, presented "Parenting the Second Time Around: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren."

"Digging It: Master Gardening Takes Root in the Ozarks," a feature article on the Master Gardner Program, was published in Ozark Monthly Magazine. Delaine Litman, SC horticulture specialist, and Tim Schnakenberg, SW ag and rural development specialist, were interviewed about the program.

Stacy Snow, extension marketing specialist, received an MU Staff Development Award to attend the Direct Marketing Association's Copywriting for Traditional and New Direct Marketing Media Workshop to be held in May in New York City.

Pat Williams’ title has changed from SW information technology specialist to SW community development specialist.

Bill Stuby, Missouri Small Business Development Centers financial manager, has accepted a position as procurement counselor for the Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Center.

The $190.4 million bond proposal before the Legislature to support six systemwide capital improvement projects includes a project on the St. Louis campus -- $23.9 million to renovate the Benton-Stadler teaching and research building for chemistry and biology.

Effective March 1, the following regional specialists assumed county program director responsibilities: Vera Nichols, CM nutrition specialist, Boone County; Wendy Flatt, CM livestock specialist, Howard County; Mark Stewart, CM livestock specialist, Callaway County; and Michelle Kroll, SC 4-H youth specialist, Miller County.

Sandy Hodge, extension public policy specialist, has been appointed an affiliated faculty member of the MU Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs to collaborate on public policy issues. She also has been appointed a senior fellow to the MU Law School's Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution.

Lala Kumar, WC horticulture specialist, received certification as a professional horticulturalist from the American Society for Horticulture Science.

Cambio de Colores received the Region VIII Exceptional Program Award from the Association for Continuing Higher Education. The award goes to programs that make unique contributions to higher education and that inspire others to create similar projects. The project is a collaborative effort of several MU units, including MU Community Development and the Department of Rural Sociology, and the MU School of Law. A major part of Cambio de Colores is the now annual conference that focuses on the changes brought about by the increase in Latino and Latina populations in Missouri and the Midwest and issues related to that immigration. The 2004 Cambio de Colores conference, "Latinos in Missouri: Gateway to a New Community," is March 10-12 in St. Louis.

Suzanne Zemelman, EC consumer and family economics specialist; Sharon Laux, EC housing and environmental design specialist, and Roxanne Miller, EC information specialist, will join representatives of the Federal Reserve Bank and other co-sponsors on KSDK-TV's "Show Me St. Louis," from 3-3:30 p.m., March 3, to promote the Women's Money Matters Workshop, March 13 in St. Charles.

Suzanne Zemelman, EC consumer and family economics specialist, and Jeanne Morisseau-Kuni of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, will discuss "Financial Literacy" and upcoming extension financial education programs for women, Feb. 24, on "St. Louis on the Air," a KWMU-FM radio talk show. The 60-minute program will air live from 11 a.m.-noon and be rebroadcast from 10-11 p.m. Afterward, the show can be accessed through the station's web site.

Jim Wirth, SW human development specialist, and the extension program, "Who Gets Grandma's Yellow Pie Plate?" was featured in a Feb. 13 Springfield News-Leader article, "Dividing Treasures/Preserve Peace: Decide Now Who Gets What." The article touted an upcoming workshop as well as participants in past programs. 

Ina Linville and Bill Pabst, state 4-H youth development specialists, and Gabrielle Sloss, 4-H/VISTA member in Callaway County, testified before the Missouri General Assembly's Joint Interim Committee on Out-of-School Time, Feb. 13, in Jefferson City.

Congratulations to Kelly McEwen, Shelby County nutrition program assistant, and husband Shawn on the Feb. 12 birth of their son, Dillon.

The Building Bridges program was selected to receive the Corporate Volunteer Service Award from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. The award recognizes positive impacts on youth through community partnerships and youth development in character education, the arts and technology. Building Bridges is a program developed by Nina Chen, WC human development specialist.

Sharen Hunt, WC 4-H youth specialist, assumed the Platte County program director responsibilities, Feb. 1.

Betty Lorton, SW business and industry specialist, assumed Greene County program director responsibilities, Feb. 1.

A Feb. 6 St. Louis Today article, "Rehab, restore, renew," highlights the work of Sharon Laux, EC environmental design specialist, with the residents of Old North St. Louis.

"The New Face of Extension," a Progressive Farmer magazine feature, appeared in the January 2004 issue. The article explored how extension is adapting to the 21st century. Gaylord Moore, SW horticulture specialist, was featured in the article.

Congratulations to Nina Chen, WC human development specialist, had an article, "Building Bridges," was published in the Journal of Intergenerational Relationships, Vol. 1, No. 3.

A Missouri Market Development Program client, Web Innovations and Technology Services of St. Louis, was featured on the front page of the Dec. 28 edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Cooper County Extension Center was featured in a Nov. 25 article in the Boonville Daily News. Council Chair Sherri Kempf was interviewed for the article.

"The Elements of Daily Life in a Historic Neighborhood: Experiencing 'old' urbanism in Missouri cities" by Charles St. Clair, WC community development specialist, was selected as an Urban Research Series winner by UMKC's Center for the City.
