Turner receives award from European Union Center

Executive Vice President and Director Ron Turner received the Special Achievement Award from the MU European Union Center for his international work on behalf of the University. Center Director Jim Scott presented the award, Dec. 3.

Each year, the EU Center honors an individual for their contributions to the international community and support for the study of European Union issues.

In making the presentation, Scott said: "For many years, Ron has challenged faculty members across the University to scholarly excellence and to greater public service -- in Missouri and across the world. He has done much to enhance the global reach of our institution."

For 17 years, Turner has directed the University of Missouri South African Education Program. Since its inception, some 300 faculty have participated in exchanges between the University of Missouri and the University of Western Cape. Turner was the first American to receive an honorary degree from the South African university.

Turner also played a pivotal role in the establishment and development of the European Union Center, Scott said, initiating a series of productive relationships between the University and sister institutions in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Through those relationships, Turner came to know Nobel laureate John Hume, who provided strong support for MU's proposal for EC Center funding from the European Union Commission.

The European Union Center is a multidisciplinary institute established at the University of Missouri-Columbia to foster transatlantic contacts and partnerships through teaching, scholarly research, and outreach activities.

Past recipients of the center's Special Achievement Award include Hume, former EU Center director Andrew Balas, Professor Emeritus David Wood (Political Science professor now retired from MU), and S. Arshad Husain, an MU pediatric psychiatrist who works with children in war-torn nations.
